ASUU urges FG to declare state of emergency on education

By FRANCIS SARDAUNA, Katsina The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Saturday admonished the federal government to, as a matter of urgency, declare a five-year state of emergency in the education sector by allocating 26 per cent of its annual budget to the sector. The union claimed that the allocation of 26 per cent of federal and state governments’ budget to education would go a long way in resuscitating the sector and avert the plaguing crisis between it and government. The Sokoto Zonal Coordinator of the union, Jamilu Shehu, who disclosed this at a press conference in Katsina, said at least six per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) should be allocated to education during the period under review. The Sokoto Zonal Office of the union comprises Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, Katsina; Federal University Dutsin-Ma, Katsina; Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto; Sokoto State University; and Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero.

A young man named Mohammed Jamilu Gunddare on Friday reacted to reports of him attempting to attack President Muhammadu Buhari in Kebbi State. Gunddare was reported to have attempted an attack president during the Argungu Festival in Kebbi State after a video of him charging towards Buhari had surfaced online. Osinbajo’s Convoy In Auto-crash, Escort Rider Dies

A police escort rider attached to Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has died in a road accident, State House said on Friday. In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, the accident occurred on the road to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport as Prof Osinbajo was on his way to a scheduled trip. He noted that Prof Osinbajo is saddened by the death of Inspector Ali Gomina, 45, and has aborted the scheduled trip. Describing Inspector Gomina, VP Osinbajo was quoted saying the officer was “a diligent, hardworking and serious-minded officer who will be greatly missed by the team. “He is survived by his wife, children and relatives.” Channel TV
