Do you think of words like “refreshing,” “powerful,” “inspiring” and “important”? Or do you think of words like “boring,” “awkward,” “uncomfortable” and “necessary”? Be honest. Sadly, prayer meetings are often something we think we should do rather than something we want to do. But if prayer is having a conversation with the God of the universe, that should be exciting! So where is the disconnect? How has something as amazing as talking to our loving and all-powerful God become so unappealing? One reason prayer meetings are awkward or boring is that they are not always run according to a plan. Shell wins UK Supreme Court case on 2011 oil spill off Nigerian coast

Image
LONDON : The UK Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that it was too late for a group of Nigerian claimants to sue two Shell subsidiaries over a 2011 offshore oil spill they say had a devastating impact on the coastal area where they live. The case stems from the leakage of an estimated 40,000 barrels of crude oil on Dec. 20, 2011, during the loading of an oil tanker at Shell's Bonga oil field, 120 km off the coast of Nigeria's southern Niger Delta. A group of 27,800 individuals and 457 communities living in the delta have been trying to sue Shell, saying the resulting oil slick polluted their lands and waterways, damaging farming, fishing, drinking water, mangrove forests and religious shrines. But the Supreme Court upheld rulings by two lower courts that found they had brought their case after the expiry of a six-year legal deadline for taking action. A panel of five Supreme Court justices unanimously rejected their lawyers' argument that the ongoing consequences of the pol

Takeaways from Season Two of Akwa Ibom Inter-ministerial Briefing

Image
Sequel to my previous series on the season one of Akwa Ibom State Government Inter-ministerial Briefing held in Uyo, where I highlighted what I considered the key points of the event, this piece is a further spotlight on the event but within the scope of the season two hosted on Friday, April 29, 2023. As a good governance advocate, I cannot help being endeared to Governor Udom Emmanuel and his administration particularly in the light of the mind-blowing facts that have come to my knowledge and that of millions of other Akwa Ibom people during the briefing. I believe Mr Udom Emmanuel will go down the history as one of Nigeria’s unsung heroes and this will be due to the fact that he is not loquacious and glib politician. I stand corrected. My first takeaway from the season two of the briefing was that Governor Emmanuel has deployed the best of his skills and experience as a financial guru in his leadership of Akwa Ibom. This impression came after listening to the Chairman, Akwa Ibom
